Aaron Sorkin Writing a Social Network-Related Project on January 6th

During an interview with The Town podcast, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin confirmed that he will be writing a sequel of sorts to 2010’s The Social Network, which will focus on the events leading up to the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6th, 2021.

Sorkin states that he directly blames Facebook for the events that transpired on that day, and believes that “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the most divisive material possible. Because that is what will increase engagement. That is what will get you to — what they call inside the hallways of Facebook — ‘the infinite scroll’ … There’s supposed to be a constant tension at Facebook between growth and integrity. There isn’t. There’s just growth. If Mark Zuckerberg woke up tomorrow morning and realized there is nothing you can buy for $120 billion that you can’t buy for $119 billion dollars, ‘So how about if I make a little bit less money? I will tune up integrity and tune down growth.’ Yes, you can do that by switching a one to a zero.”

No studio is currently attached to the project, but Sorkin hopes it will be a movie. It’s still way too early to tell if the project will ever see the light of day, as he had also previously worked on a January 6th-related screenplay that never moved forward. It’s also unclear if any of the elements from that screenplay will be transposed in the latest one.

I could see myself becoming very intrigued by the potential of this film, but only if Aaron Sorkin does not direct it.

I’m cooler with Sorkin direction than most seem to be, but as long as he writes it, I’m more than curious…
