The Cast and Crew of ‘The Idea of You’ Are Ready for the World to See Their New Romantic Comedy

The Idea of You will premiere on Prime Video on May 2, introducing audiences to how Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway) falls in love with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine) despite the unusual circumstances surrounding their romance. Hayes is the star of a boy band, and he casually met Solène at Coachella, where she was taking her daughter to see Campbell on the stage.

Awards Radar had the opportunity of attending the virtual press conference for the upcoming release, where Anne Hathaway, Nicholas Galitzine, director Michael Showalter and more had the opportunity of discussing the experience of making the movie, as well as their expectations for the audience when it comes to them watching The Idea of You for the first time.

Michael Showalter, who also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming film, talked about what excited him about working with the cast of The Idea of You: “For me, that’s what it’s all about. Working with actors and going on the journey together, to these stories and to these worlds. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast. Anne pretty much set the bar for everybody with all the work she was doing and it was incredible. From the first moment I met Nicholas I felt that we found Hayes.”

Cathy Schulman, one of the producers for the upcoming film, discussed how the team had only one actress in mind for the lead: “I did! We had Anne in mind from the very beginning of the development process. It’s this thing that I always teach my young executives not to do. Don’t develop a project thinking that you’re going to get one actress, because it never works. Only in this particular case (laughs). She’s the only person who read it, she was our first choice, and she said yes. It was a dream come true, (when) that actually happened.

Anne Hathaway explained why The Idea of You made her return to romantic comedies, after stepping away from the genre for a while: “I didn’t notice that it was happening, but I received a lot of romantic scripts in my twenties. In my thirties, I was focused on my family life and motherhood, trying to find what my path was going to be. Being an actress with this really deep personal life. I didn’t notice that I hadn’t been sent a romantic script in a really long time. When this found its way to me, I was so honored to have been the first choice for this. It was such a beautiful character and such an amazing role. A part of me thought: “Where did the stories go? Why did it stop?”. I saw the path to the answer to those questions on the script.

Nicholas Galitzine was asked if the role Hayes Campbell was ever intimidating, and he was happy to talk about his experience with the role: “Obviously, the dancing and the performing, especially, was tricky because it was something I’d never done before. You always want more hours in the day to be able to hone those skills. When it came to the human side of Hayes, which was the side I was most interested in, I just had such a wonderful partner. I felt the chemistry and the connection between us immediately. That first day with Cathy and Michael as well, was this 20-hour behemoth of jumping in cold water and being in France, Italy and Savannah. I was just filled with a sense of excitement.”

The Idea of You premieres on Prime Video on May 2.
