After Neve Campbell announced her return to the Scream franchise as Sidney Prescott, Variety reports that Courteney Cox is in talks to return to portray Gale Weathers for the seventh time in Paramount’s upcoming Scream VII.
Kevin Williamson will make his feature directorial debut, with James Vanderblit and Gary Busick writing the screenplay. However, the original stars’ return hasn’t been met with the same excitement as it otherwise would’ve.
Happy Death Day‘s Christopher Landon was initially set to direct the project, with Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega set to return as Sam and Tara Carpenter. However, Barrera was controversially fired from the film over social media posts related to the ongoing war in Gaza, with Landon and Ortega dropping out shortly after. None of the other members of the ‘Core Four’ will likely reprise their roles for the seventh movie.
After Barrera’s firing, Landon explained that his “dream job turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.” Landon is currently in talks to helm Drop for Platinum Dunes, while Barrera will star in Abigail, directed by Scream VI‘s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
While it’s certainly great to see Campbell getting what she wanted after ultimately declining to star in Scream VI, there’s a great sentiment amongst even the most die-hard Scream fans that this installment should not be made or released, with many saying they will not see the film over Spyglass’ treatment of Melissa Barrera. But it looks like the film will be made much sooner than anticipated. Whether it’ll make any money remains to be seen.
