It’s official: House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock will portray Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the DC Universe. The actress beat CODA‘s Emilia Jones and Z-O-M-B-I-E-S star Meg Donnelly, who were also vying for the role. Donnelly had previously voiced the character in Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One.
It is heavily rumored that the character will appear in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy before making her big screen debut in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, with Ana Nogueira set to write the screenplay, but that has not been entirely set in stone yet.
Alcock will be the third actor to portray Supergirl on the big screen, with Helen Slater starring in a 1984 spinoff of the Christopher Reeve Superman films and Sasha Calle in the DC Extended Universe, specifically in Andy Muschietti‘s The Flash.
In a post on Instagram, Gunn confirmed the casting reports as accurate and said the following:
“This is accurate. Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU. Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira.”
