Interview: Kal Penn Discusses How He Couldn’t Say No to Working With Snoop Dogg in ‘The Underdoggs’

It’s hard not to love Kal Penn. Whether it’s Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, literally working in the Obama Administration, or his small screen gigs, Penn just has an inherent likability to him. That’s part of the special sauce that makes his supporting turn in The Underdoggs more than someone else might have made it. Recently, I hopped on Zoom with him to talk about Snoop Dogg, agents, and much more. Today, that conversation comes your way.

In my review of The Underdoggs (here), I had the following to say about the cast, including Penn:

Snoop Dogg turns in the most complete performance I’ve seen from him to date. The humor is more or less what we’ve seen from him over the years, but the light character work and evolution of Jaycen is noteworthy. It’s also crucial, since the kids are largely stock types for a film like this, while Tika Sumpter has very little to do. Mike Epps plays an assistant coach that mostly grates on you, while Kal Penn has a few fun scenes as Jaycen’s agent. Other supporting characters in the movie include George LopezAndrew Schulz, and more.

Below, you can hear my chat with Penn. I was interested to hear how he opted to sign on just for the opportunity to work with Snoop Dogg. Penn also discusses an experience as a young actor that he brought to the role, which is a really great story. He’s very funny, very nice, and a great conversation. You can see him now in The Underdoggs, which is currently streaming on Prime Video.

Here now is my interview with The Underdoggs co-star Kal Penn. Enjoy:

The Underdoggs is available to watch right now on Prime Video!
