Sunday Scaries: 2024 Fright Flicks to Anticipate

NEON

The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we look forward to some of the 2024 horror efforts that are on our minds…

In years past (here and here, for example), I wrote that if you were to peruse my list of the yearly releases to look forward to, you’ll notice that some horror movies are littered throughout. So, I’m once again doing the same this year, based on my 2024 list (here). With Night Swim (reviewed here) kicking off fright flicks for this year, I’m very eager to look at what else is on the horizon. Below, I’ve collected six films that I think may once again move the horror needle over the next twelve months. Of course, some will underwhelm, like what I just saw, while others will surprise that we’re not even thinking of. That’s kind of the fun here, right?

Here now a half dozen options for horror movies this year that could thrill genre fans throughout 2024…

Cinedigm Entertainment Group

Honorable Mention: Lisa Frankenstein, A Quiet Place: Day One, The Strangers: Chapter 1, Untitled Universal Monster Thriller

6. Nosferatu – This is the elevated horror of the lot, in a way. Robert Eggers makes some very engrossing films, so his take on the classic vampire story is undoubtedly going to be creepily immersive. I’m not sure I’ll love it, but I know I’m fascinated by what we’ll eventually get to see here with Nosferatu.

5. Alien: Romulus – Likewise here, the Alien franchise is all over the place, so this could be cool, terrible, or anything in between. However, Fede Álvarez has a gnarly nature to him that could really fit as a palate cleanser with this series. If nothing else, this is likely to be our largest scale horror effort in 2024.

4. Terrifier 3 – The Terrifier series has won me over. The unlikely franchise is our current king of splatter, introducing a new movie monster in Art the Clown. So, this trilogy maker, set during the Christmas season, should be a bloody good time. Terrifier 3 is not going to be high art, but it’s going to be hardcore horror that we should all have a blast with.

3. MaXXXine – Another unlikely trilogy, Ti West continues to build upon X, after Pearl, with MaXXXine. The continued showcase for Mia Goth, it has both high and low art aspects to it, making it one of the most interesting independent horror franchises out there. I truly can’y wait for this one, as many of you will note by its inclusion twice in a row.

2. Saw XI – It goes without saying how much of a Saw fan I am. So, following on the rebirth of the property with Saw X, another installment likely gives us one more shot at Tobin Bell leading the way. I have no idea where the powers that be will go here with the story, but I know that I could not be more in for whatever it turns out to be.

1. They Follow – The surprise announcement of a sequel to It Follows, with Maika Monroe and David Robert Mitchell returning, was a welcome bit of news last year. Assuming that it finishes shooting in time, They Follow is easily the horror title that I’m most looking forward to. The first one blew me away, so expectations are sky high.

Stay tuned for all of these horror titles throughout the year!
