The Golden Globes are back and promise they are and will be better. Are they and will they? That’s a question for another time. Instead, it is time to share my 2023 Golden Globes predictions in the television categories. You can find Joey Magidson’s Golden Globes film category predictions here or year round, with all the other predictions under the Predictions tab.
It has been a few years since our last Globes predictions were made on Awards Radar. The ceremony which ran on NBC for decades was not aired due to the diversity controversy that almost toppled it. With the overhaul made to the organization, predicting where the votes will fall is a bit of challenge. New members, new voters, new home on CBS, and hopefully a new mindset.
But how so you predict where votes will be distributed with so little concrete history base them on? Especially since are some newer arrivals to the voting pool that premiered in the last few weeks to much acclaim like the fifth season of Fargo and Lessons In Chemistry. Will they draw enough votes to shift the balance and walk home with Globes gold? Also keep in mind that several series are saying goodbye, including Barry, Succession, and Ted Lasso(?). Will voters want to send them off with some golden hardware?
My strategy is to play it safe. I don’t see the series’ farewell factoring in too much spreading the love too much. Besides, the aforementioned Succession, the nominations will mostly likely be their goodbye gift as neither snagged many acting nominations. Overall, I am expecting the voters to honor some old blood and new blood across categories with a solid night for Succession, Beef, and The Bear… all of which had very strong buzz throughout the year. But this is the Golden Globes… you never really know.
Plus, there are many deserving nominees leading to several very competitive categories, namely Actress In a Limited Series, Actress in a Comedy, and Limited Series which are stacked top to bottom. Those are the three categories I feel where the voting distribution could clear room for a surprise win. While I do not expect a lot of surprises, that’s why they call them surprises.
