Interview: Discussing ‘Poor Things’ and the Fun of Being an Actor with Willem Dafoe

Willem Dafoe is one of the best actors in the business. Watch him in anything and you’ll see that. I’m always curious what film roles he selects, very much due to his massive talents. When he signed on to make a Yorgos Lanthimos movie, I knew we were all in for a treat. He did not disappoint, either, as Poor Things gets to showcase a ton of actors, including Dafoe. During the recent press day for the flick, I was offered up some time with him, which I was certainly not going to turn down. Today, you can see our chat, in all of its short but sweet glory!

In my rave review back at the Telluride Film Festival (found here), I had this to say about Dafoe and the cast:

Emma Stone gives the performance of her career so far playing Bella Baxter. She could easily win her second Academy Award for Best Actress. Watching her evolve Bella is a work of art. She’s a riot comedically, but also a forceful power. You root for her at all turns and celebrate every new achievement. Bella is one of the cinematic creations of the year. Mark Ruffalo has never been funnier, making his hammy role an absolute riot whenever he’s on screen. Ruffalo should also be knee deep in the Best Supporting Actor race. Willem Dafoe and Ramy Youssef are very solid, but fall more into the background in the second half, though Dafoe comes on strong again before things wrap up.

Below, you can see my discussion with Dafoe. I was keen to find out about the fun he had here, as well as what he looks for as an actor these days. You can tell he’s still having a blast, as well as is more than up for whatever Lanthimos throws at him. This might be one of the most amusing turns of his career. Dafoe very much anchors the first section of the film, helping to make it what it is. As you all get to see the movie, you’ll understand why he’s got the Oscar buzz that he has.
