When you watch Cassandro, it’s impossible not to see Gael García Bernal giving one of his best performances to date. The actor has always been a very reliable presence, but here he goes to a whole other level. Ever since the Sundance Film Festival, his turn in Cassandro has been winning raves. As awards season progresses, I recently hopped on the phone to talk with him about the experience. Clearly, it’s one he’s cherished.
Below, you can hear my discussion with Bernal. We talk about what attracted him to the role, wrestling, in particular lucha libre wrestling, and plenty more. He’s clearly proud of the work and glad that Cassandro has been catching on with audiences, and it shows. Plus, he’s just a lovely guy to speak with, as you’re about to find out. It made for an easy conversation, as well as one with plenty of interesting tidbits about the movie.
In my review out Sundance (here), I had the following to say about Bernal’s work:
Gael García Bernal embraces the role and dives in fully to this film. Raúl Castillo doesn’t have nearly as much to do, but the talented actor does his best to elevate the role. Roberta Colindrez has a sort of stock trainer part, but the gender reversal makes it a bit more interesting. Supporting players here include Bad Bunny, Perla de la Rosa, and more, but Bernal is the unquestioned star.
Here now is my interview with Cassandro star Gael García Bernal. Enjoy:
