A big bit of category placement news has broken. Ever since it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has been seen as a surefire Oscar contender across the board. One of the categories in which it seemed like it had potential to win was Best Supporting Actress for Lily Gladstone. Our editor Joey Magidson had her predicted to win Supporting Actress. Not so fast, it seems.
According to Variety, Gladstone is being campaigned Lead for her performance in the film. So, that means her widely praised turn in Killers of the Flower Moon will be up for nomination in the Best Actress category. Is she still a frontrunner? That’s for Joey to address in his predictions update this week, but for now, we know that she’s going Lead, not Supporting.

That at least two of the three trailers released for this movie positioned her as the main character over the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro leads me to suspect that the assumption of Lily Gladstone‘s status as a Supporting Actress contender was driven mostly by pundits and not the studio itself.
More or less. I think she and DiCaprio are the focus, and there’s a pivot that happens, but she was always a flimsy Supporting player. As you know, I don’t mind “category fraud” like most, especially here when it would have been easier for her to win, but this does feel like the right call, role wise.
