Will Ferrell to Play John Madden in David O. Russell’s Next Film

John Madden is not just a hall of fame football coach, but an iconic broadcaster as well, in addition to his name being on a juggernaut of a video game franchise. So, it’s not surprising that he’s the subject of a new biopic. The talent involved? That actually is a bit surprising.

According to Deadline, Will Ferrell is in talks to play Madden in the movie, to be called Madden, with David O. Russell on board to direct. The screenplay is by Cambron Clark, was on the Black List recently, and actually focuses at least in part on how he came to be involved with the games. So, this could be perhaps more about video games than football? Stay tuned for more.

For some reason, while reading this news, I was reminded of Eva Longoria lamenting how white men can direct catastrophic box office flops and still get ample opportunities to helm more films while Latina filmmakers like her can kiss their directorial futures goodbye if they put out even one movie that isn’t a financial success.
