Interview: Diane Guerrero on Crazy Jane and the Buttpocalypse in ‘Doom Patrol’

There are few shows that regularly employ completely wild, off-the-wall plot points and manage to remain coherent and incredibly watchable. For HBO Max’s Doom Patrol, now in its fourth season, weird is the name of the game, and the superhero team facing an army of zombie butts somehow doesn’t feel all that strange. The fantastic group of unwilling heroes includes Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero), who houses many different personalities and powers to go with each one of them.

Awards Radar had the chance to speak to Guerrero, who last spoke with the site last year about her role in Encanto, about balancing Jane’s many personas and getting to work with superb actors like Brendan Fraser and Joivan Wade. On finding out that she wasn’t going to be playing every personality in the Underground, Guerrero expressed:

“I thought that that’s how it was going to go, but then I remember I found out that it wasn’t going to be that way, and I’m like, wait, so, why am I not playing every character? Everybody kind of just looked at me like, how are we going to do that? What was explained to me at the time was that it was actually kind of cool to see different versions of these characters inside of the Underground, inside of Kay’s mind, and that, just because the physical body can portray just this version of a person, inside your mind, you can look completely different. It made so much sense to me, so I’m really glad they went with that way of shooting things.”

On whether she has a favorite personality:

“I really enjoyed Baby Doll when I played her. I thought she was so fun, and I love that she got to play with Dorothy and they got to be kids together, but then you see a different side of Baby Doll, which, she’s not with us anymore, which is really sad, but it was fun to play that version of myself. I definitely have a Baby Doll inside of me, and so that’s why it was so fun to play.”

Doom Patrol is currently streaming on HBO Max. The midseason finale for season four drops next Thursday, January 5th.
