Interview: Talking All About the Fun of ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery’ with Janelle Monáe

Netflix

Janelle Monáe has quickly made a major impression on the film industry, and rightly so. The singer broke out in movies back in 2016 with a hell of a one-two punch, debuting in Hidden Figures and Moonlight. That springboard put her on the cinematic map, with roles in works like Harriet and Homecoming, though this year, it’s been a whole new ballgame with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. It’s a career best performance from Monáe, without question. The Knives Out sequel is also proving to be her biggest hit, which bodes well for the next act in her still young career. A week or two ago, she and I hopped on Zoom to talk about the movie, the audio of which is here for you to enjoy today!

Below, you can hear my conversation with Monáe. We didn’t have a ton of time, but we made sure to make it count. Mainly, we got into her excitement to be a part of this sequel. Her enthusiasm is palpable, and when you see her in the film, you’ll be as excited that she was in it. Monáe is truly one of the highlights, to the point where the movie’s most consistent Oscar buzz has been for her performance. If you didn’t see the flick during its special limited theatrical run last month, you can see Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery streaming on Netflix on the 23rd…

In my review of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery out of the Toronto International Film Festival (here), I had this to say:

Daniel Craig seems to be having so much fun with this role. He wears Benoit Blanc not just with pride, but with a smile on his face. Craig knows just how enjoyable this all is. It’s not hard to imagine that he’ll want to play Blanc for decades to come. This time around, the supporting players are just as much of a riot. Janelle Monáe and Edward Norton leave the biggest impression, but that takes nothing away from Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and Leslie Odom Jr. The A-list yet somewhat contained cast also includes Madelyn ClineEthan Hawke, and Jessica Henwick.

Here now is my interview with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery star Janelle Monáe. Enjoy:
