Netflix Acquires Robert Downey Sr. Documentary With An Oscars Push In Mind

Netflix

Netflix has acquired the rights to Sr., a documentary about the life of independent filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. Directed by Chris Smith and produced by Downey’s son, actor Robert Downey Jr., the film explores the most memorable moments from the artist’s life and career. Joey is a fan of this one, with his review forthcoming. Recently, he posted his thoughts on Twitter:

Sr. held its world premiere during this year’s edition of the Telluride Film Festival, which took place from September 2nd until September 5th. Next up is the New York Film Festival next month. The film will receive a heavy Oscars campaign from Netflix, who are evidently confident about the project. It will be available to stream on the platform before the end of the year.

Team Downey, the production company founded by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan Downey, was behind the making of Sr. They previously collaborated with Netflix on a television series released last year called Sweet Tooth. Nonso Anozie and Christian Convery starred in the show, which told the story of a society dealing with the aftermath of a viral pandemic.

Regarding Netflix’s acquisition of Sr., Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey stated the following: “We’re grateful to have Netflix partner with us on this highly personal project. They’re the ideal home for our unconventional, oft absurd, brutally in-depth homage.”
