Ariana DeBose, Academy Award winner for her performance in last year’s West Side Story, has been cast in Blumhouse and Prime Video’s House of Spoils. The movie will be directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Crudy (Blow the Man Down, Moonhaven), who wrote the screenplay based on an original idea they had.
DeBose became the first openly queer Afro Latina to win an Academy Award this year. She also earned a BAFTA, a Critics’ Choice and a Screen Actors Guild award for her performance in Steven Spielberg‘s remake of the 1961 classic.
Prime Video and Blumhouse have previously collaborated with Welcome to Blumhouse, a collection of genre movies, and Nahnathcka Khan‘s slasher horror-comedy, Totally Killer, which recently wrapped production. Prime Video will also have Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Nanny, directed by Nikyatu Jusu, available to stream on December 16th.
Regarding the project, Amazon Studios head of movies, Julie Rapaport, stated: “Since Blow the Man Down, we have been huge fans of Bridget and Danielle’s unique filmmaking voice and knew we needed to be a part of whatever they wanted to do next. Pairing their thrilling script with Ariana’s incredible talent is a dream come true, and we could not be more excited to bring this story to the screen and to our customers around the world.”
