A Fourth of July Message From Awards Radar

“In the Valley of Elah” (2007) Cinematography by Roger Deakins

Today is the Fourth of July, and normally, I’d be wishing you all a happy holiday from everyone at Awards Radar. Now, I still hope everybody has fun and is safe, but there’s more on my mind today. It’s America’s birthday, in a manner of speaking, our Independence Day, and I’m not sure that the United States deserves a party this year. Especially in the shadow of the recent Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the country seems as broken and headed to a regressive place as ever before. So, while it’s a holiday, sure, there seems to be less to celebrate this year than usual.

At the same time, I’m sure plenty of you are barbecuing or headed to the movies. It’s a Fourth of July tradition, of course, and it’s also a good distraction. So, I don’t begrudge anyone who takes that route. Cinema has that power, even if someone like me is gravitating more towards Never Rarely Sometimes Always these days, as evidenced by my Sunday Scaries articles yesterday (found here). Then again, I also finally watched RRR this weekend, so I’m not immune to wanting to forget our hellscape, either.

If you did go see something, let us know what you saw. Was it the new Minions movie? Did you see Top Gun: Maverick again? Whatever you’re doing or seeing, be safe, and here’s hoping that better days are ahead for America…

Best wishes from Awards Radar!
