After an incredible March at the box office, with movies such as The Batman, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and RRR reaching pre-pandemic box-office heights, the unpredictable effects of the box-office recovery during COVID is still being felt as the world tries to “live with the virus.” In a surprising move, Lionsgate has sold the rights to the Jennifer Lopez/Josh Duhamel rom-com Shotgun Wedding to Amazon Prime Video, and the movie will go directly to the streaming service as a result.
This isn’t the first time Lionsgate has sold the rights to one of their movies to Amazon due to the pandemic, as the streaming service recently acquired the Canadian distribution rights to Roland Emmerich‘s Moonfall after a planned theatrical release was scrapped over fears that movie theatres would still remain closed in the country (most of them reopened on the day Moonfall came out in the United States).
It’s worth noting that Prime Video had the film’s international rights for the movie beforehand, but Lionsgate has now sold the film’s entire rights to the streaming service as well. Shotgun Wedding was initially planned to release on June 29, but now it’s unclear when the movie will get released. According to Variety, the movie could also be released in theatres alongside its streaming release, but the release date has still not been confirmed.
Shotgun Wedding is directed by Jason Moore, and stars Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge, Lenny Kravitz, and Cheech Marin. Its plot synopsis reads “Darcy and Tom get their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding just as the couple get cold feet but suddenly everyone’s lives are in danger when the entire party is taken hostage. The couple must work together to save their loved ones if they don’t end up killing each other first.”
In a statement, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios said “Packed with action, comedy, and a dash of romance, ‘Shotgun Wedding’ is one of those rare films with something for everyone. With a cast led by Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel, the film is bursting with star power and fantastic performances. We are thrilled to work with the entire filmmaking team to bring this hilarious, multifaceted film to Prime Video audiences around the world.”
