Interview: Star Peter Dinklage Discusses the Appeal of ‘Cyrano’

Peter Dinklage is one of our best actors, bar none. At the same time, he doesn’t always get a true spotlight to shine with. Cyrano represents perhaps his highest profile film role, and boy does he knock it out of the park. Dinklage does career best work, making the role his own in a very compelling and distinctive way. To say that I wanted to talk to him about it is an understatement. I’d interviewed him a handful of years ago for an indie movie, so this wasn’t our first chat, but it’s a good one. Plus, this is the start of Cyrano week here at Awards Radar, with plenty more conversations to share from last year’s Press Day here in New York City.

Below, you can see my conversation with Dinklage. We only had a short bit of time to talk, but we made good use of it. Cyrano is the focus, of course, but we did share a bit of a bonding moment over The National, which we’re both fans of. Dinklage is obviously very charming, but he’s also just a good guy to sit with. I wish we’d had more time, but this is a good one, given the constraints. Once you see the flick this weekend, you’ll be raving about Dinklage’s central performance too…

This is some of what I had to say about Dinklage in Cyrano from my highly positive review:

Peter Dinklage is phenomenal here, delivering a career best turn. The same can be said for Haley Bennett, though Dinklage is the true star. He dazzles as Cyrano, allowing us to see his foolish pride equally alongside his winning charm and verbosity. It’s, for my money, the definitive interpretation of the character. Bennett makes Roxanne vibrant and strong, never once feeling like a simple damsel. The same goes for Kelvin Harrison Jr. and his way of making sure Christian is simple, but never a simpleton. All three showcase a good heart that leads the way. Supporting players, in addition to a scenery chewing but very fun Ben Mendelsohn, include Monica DolanGlen Hansard, Joshua JamesBashir SalahuddinRuth Sheen, and more.
