BAFTA Nominations Led By ‘Dune’ and ‘The Power of the Dog’

Moments ago, the BAFTA nominations for this year were revealed, bright and early. As always, there were both surprises and snubs, though it’s worth noting that these misses might be less critical than in the past. After all, the group has smaller committes choosing the nominees, which is meant to diversify the lineup. So, while it makes for smaller performances and films to get in, it also leads to some snubs for movies and talent that won’t miss with Oscar. Then again, they still managed not to nominate Denzel Washington, so some things never change (Andrew Garfield was snubbed in Best Actor as well). Another trio of misses worth noting came in Best Actress, where not only did Olivia Colman miss, but so did Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart. Overall, Dune led the way with eleven nominations, while The Power of the Dog was next in line, followed by Belfast.

This makes Lady Gaga in House of Gucci the only performance from an actress in a leading role from 2021 to receive nominations from the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Critics Choice, and now BAFTA.

Which is a wild awards season twist I never would have predicted even half-jokingly.
