Earlier tonight, Red Rocket filmmaker Sean Baker and screenwriter Chris Bergoch received the Distinguished Screenwriter Award at North Carolina’s Film Fest 919 during the movie’s festival debut. It’s worth noting that the award was to be presented during a Q&A/panel session of Red Rocket moderated by Awards Radar’s very own editor-in-chief Joey Magidson (you can read his review of the film here).
Previous winners of the Distinguished Screenwriter Award include Nomadland‘s Chloé Zhao and The Two Popes Anthony McCarten. This isn’t the first time that Baker and Bergoch participated in Film Fest 919, with their previous film, The Florida Project, serving as the 2017 edition of the festival’s debut through drive-in and theater screenings.
As noted by Awards Daily, Film Fest 919 have awarded their two previous audience awards to an eventual best picture winner, so it’ll be very interesting to see which film nabs the audience award this year. The audience award will be revealed Sunday, while Red Rocket will exclusively hit theaters on December 3rd.
