Interview: ‘Dune’ Editor Joe Walker Discusses Bringing the Epic to Cinematic Life

Dune is about as technical an achievement as it gets. Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve was certainly the right man to bring this movie to epic life, but there are so many ways in which this could have gone sideways. Easily, one of the surest ways for the film to have failed would be with poor editing. Luckily, Academy Award nominated editor Joe Walker was his man, so that was never going to happen. Villeneuve and Walker paired to make this flick go down surprisingly easy. Considering the undertaking, it boggles the mind how they went about doing it. Good thing for me, Walker was available to talk with me about just that. We hopped on Zoom a few weeks ago, and now, I’m pleased to bring this to you all today…

Below, you can see my chat with Walker. I spoke with the Oscar nominee about a number of angles in regards to Dune, but mostly, we just had a good time. Walker is a tremendously fun dude, able to easily explain the complexities of his field. So, I was delighted to get down to the nitty gritty with him. The material is serious and the pressure to succeed was certainly there, but we also get to laugh a lot here. Next, you’ll see Walker explain how he utilized the extra year of prep time last year and how it improved the film, among many other topics. It’s a great conversation, if I do say so myself.

Dune

In my review of Dune out of the Toronto International Film Festival, I was fairly effusive in my praise of the technical achievement by Villeneuve, Walker, and company. Here is a bit from my TIFF take:

Denis Villeneuve was passionate about this and it shows. Not just directing but co-writing with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts, Villeneuve wants to capture your imagination at all turns. Having composer Hans Zimmer working overtime to immerse you in the sounds of Dune doesn’t hurt, nor does the awe-inspiring visuals from cinematographer Greig Fraser. The editing from Joe Walker keeps you focused in all of the right places. The editing is where this easily could have crumbled, so he deserves amble credit. Villeneuve the director is really knocking it out of the park here.
