Ecuador Becomes the First to Submit a Film for Best International Feature

And we’re off.

Just before the major film festivals officially kick off the award season, Ecuador has already submitted their title for Best International Feature for the upcoming 94th Academy Awards.

What is the film in question, you might ask? Well. it’s Sumergible, a Spanish-language drama from director Alfredo León León, written by León and Daniela Granja Nuñez. The movie stars Natalie Reyes (Terminator: Dark Fate), among others. In terms of plot, this is about a young girl found bound and gagged in the cargo hold of a sinking drug smuggling submarine.

The early selection was made by a jury of over 50 members of the Academia de las Artes Audiovisuales y Cinematográficas del Ecuador.

Of course whether or not the film itself will actually be nominated at the Oscars remains to be seen. Time will tell there, but it’s exciting to see a movie already being submitted before the fall festivals even start.
