‘The Card Counter’ Gets a Release Date from Focus Features

Focus Features

After finally earning his first Oscar nomination for his screenplay for 2018’s First Reformed, all eyes were on how filmmaker Paul Schrader would follow up that career high point.

He quickly announced his next project would be The Card Counter, a revenge thriller starring Oscar Isaac. The official synopsis for the film describes it as  such: “Tell (Isaac) just wants to play cards. His spartan existence on the casino trail is shattered when he is approached by Cirk (Tye Sheridan), a vulnerable and angry young man seeking help to execute his plan for revenge on a military colonel (Willem Dafoe). Tell sees a chance at redemption through his relationship with Cirk. But keeping Cirk on the straight-and-narrow proves impossible, dragging Tell back into the darkness of his past.”

Tiffany Haddish also co-stars in the film.

While we still wait to hear if the film will have its expected debut at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Focus Features has set the film for a September 10, 2021 release date.
