Top Prize at the Visual Effects Society Awards Goes To ‘The Midnight Sky’

The Visual Effects Society (VES) have handed out their winners for the best achievements in film, television, and more, with the top prize perhaps being a bit of a surprise.

While Tenet was presumed to be the frontrunner for their biggest award of the night, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the win actually went to George Clooney’s Netflix film, The Midnight Sky

Does this boost The Midnight Sky’s chance of getting some Oscar gold? The short answer is “maybe”. While it is a big win, the VES isn’t the best predictor of who will win on Oscar night, with the winner in that category only going on to win the Oscar in 4 of the last 10 years. Still, you’d probably rather win it than not.

The Midnight Sky won one other prize, for Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project, while other films to be awarded included Mank and Soul

On the TV side, as tends to be the way in technical awards for television these days, The Mandalorian took dominance, winning three prizes including Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode.
