‘Cruella’ Showcases a New Trailer for the Origin Story Starring Emma Stone

With Godzilla vs. Kong proving that it’s possible for a film to still dominate in theaters while opening simultaneously on a streaming service, many people are questioning if other films will be able to pull off the same feat.

Perhaps the next major test of that will be when Disney releases Cruella in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access the same day, May 28th.

Disney clearly sees a path to theatrical success with the Godzilla vs. Kong numbers coming in, as they have quickly responded to the film’s massive opening weekend by dropping a new trailer for their next Marvel Cinematic Universe property, Black Widow, and now a new trailer for Cruella relatively soon after we saw the first trailer released.

The film stars Emma Stone as the titular villain, who was iconically brought to life by Glenn Close in the 1996 film 101 DalmatiansCruella will tell the origin story of just why she became so cruel, and perhaps where that love for spotted fur came from.

Joining Stone in the film are Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, and Mark Strong.

Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya) directed the film from a script by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna and Kelly Marcel Steve Zissis

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

Academy Award® winner Emma Stone (“La La Land”) stars in Disney’s “Cruella,” an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. “Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

Check out the new trailer for Cruella below, and see the film in theaters or streaming on Disney+ on May 28th:
