Tonight, the Golden Globe Awards will be held. To be sure, it’ll be a show unlike any we’ve had before, at least for the Globes. Taking place both in Los Angeles and New York City, prepare for a hybrid ceremony that will likely be divisive. Even so, again having Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosting will be a welcome sign of some form of normalcy. All this is to say that we’re both getting something we’re used to and something decidedly different. Once the initial surprise and adjustment of it all wears off, it’ll be about the films. Then, we’ll be focusing on the movies and performances that may well be gearing up for Academy Award attention.
The only thing left to do now is wait. In the meantime, be sure to hang around Awards Radar for all your Golden Globe needs. This is what I wrote on Friday in my predictions piece, previewing the Globes:
On Sunday evening, the Golden Globe Awards will be handed out. Now, as I’ve said in the past, the Globes don’t mean a whole hell of a lot. They can help, but they can’t really hurt. It’s almost like a bonus to have the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (iffy as they are, as a group) bestow some statues on you. At the same time, missing out on honors from the HFPA pales in comparison to the Guilds. If a Guild gives you a win, it’s huge. If you lose there, it matters. So, consider Sunday night a dress rehearsal, in a way. The bigger fish are yet to be fried.
What should we look for with the Globes? Mainly, it’s to see if they try to anoint one film or spread the love. If it’s the former, The Trial of the Chicago 7 is in a good spot to benefit. At the same time, Mank does have a strong chance to lead or tie for the most wins, as well. It does seem like Netflix may wind up with their first Best Picture prize. from the HFPA. Now, if they go in all sorts of wild directions, you could easily see Borat Subsequent Moviefilm walk away with the most wins. Then, there’s X factors like Promising Young Woman. At the very least, this is easily the most wide open Golden Globe ceremony in recent memory. If nothing else, it adds a little excitement and mystery to Globes weekend!
