Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge had surprisingly excellent chemistry as Lando Calrissian and droid L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story back in 2018, where even the people who didn’t like the film could agree that they were the standouts. Their connection extended offscreen, seen in the film’s press tour, and of course, in Glover’s charming tribute to Waller-Bridge at the 2019 BAFTA Awards.
It was only a matter of time before the duo worked together again. What might be surprising is the way that this reunion is manifesting. In an Instagram story on Glover’s account today the duo announced that they will be creating, executive producing, and starring in a new iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, based on the hit Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt film released by New Regency in 2005. The new series is set to debut in 2022 on Amazon Prime.
Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke shared her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Talk about the dream team! Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is an iconic property, and we can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe and Francesca make it their own. We’re thrilled to be working with them, and with such great partners at New Regency.”
Waller-Bridge is no stranger to Amazon, of course, having created and starred in Fleabag, one of the most acclaimed series of the decade, which won six Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Glover also has history with the studio, having released his musical film Guava Island, co-starring Rihanna on their streaming service.
Glover and Waller-Bridge are two of the most acclaimed television creators in the business right now, between Atlanta, Killing Eve, and Fleabag, so it’s safe to say that all eyes are going to be on Mr. and Mrs. Smith when it premieres in 2022.
