26th Annual Critics Choice Awards Announce Series Nominations

Quibi is back, baby! Okay, maybe not, but the now defunct streaming service that launched and died over the course of 2020 did pick up a whopping 4 nominations in the Best Short Form Series from the 26th annual Critics Choice Awards, who announced their series nominations today.

While Quibi might not be the talking point that everyone will be discussing around the virtual water cooler, there are plenty of big name titles who racked up the nominations today. Leading the count were Ozark, from HBO, and The Crown, from Netflix, who pulled in 6 nominations each, including nods for Best Drama Series.

The HBO/Netflix rivalry seen there extends across the board, as Netflix narrowly eked out the veteran cabler for nomination total, with Netflix dominating all studios with 26 nominations, while HBO received 24.

While the field is jam packed with returning competitors like Better Call SaulThis Is Us, and Schitt’s Creek, there was room for some new series to crack the field. Lovecraft Country had a very strong showing with 5 nominations, including acting nods in all four drama series categories, while everyone’s favorite crowdpleaser to help us get through these stressful times, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso scored 3 nominations in the comedy categories.

Of course, the miniseries/television movie categories also have some heated competition, with this year’s, “Is it movie or TV?”, hot topic Small Axe getting nominated for Best Limited Series. Interestingly, John Boyega is the only Small Axe actor to receive a nomination, perhaps a sign of awards bodies still not knowing what to do with Steve McQueen’s anthology series, available to stream right now on Amazon Prime.

The 26th annual Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Taye Diggs, will air live on The CW on March 7th 2021 at 7pm ET.
