Trailer Drops for Hulu Release ‘The United States vs. Billie Holiday’

The awards season field is starting to narrow down its lists of contenders, with us getting the shape of whose names we might expect to hear on nomination morning. There are still a few big question marks, however. One of the biggest is Lee Daniels’ The United States vs. Billie Holiday, starring Andra Day as the iconic jazz musician.

Day is a Grammy-nominated singer making her acting debut in the film from Daniels, a director who previously led his Precious stars Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe to Oscar love, with a win for the former. Can Day shake up the Best Actress category this year? We’ve now finally got our first trailer for the film, which recently shifted from a theatrical release through Paramount to a Hulu streaming release dated for February 26th, 2021, just in time to qualify for this year’s Oscars. Alongside Day, the film stars Trevante RhodesGarrett HedlundNatasha LyonneDa’Vine Joy Randolph, Evan Ross, and more.

For months now it’s been presumed that Frances McDormandViola DavisCarey Mulligan, and Vanessa Kirby have four slots sewn up in the relatively thin field. That fifth slot, however, has remained very open, with contenders like Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit), Sophia Loren (The Life Ahead), and Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man) circling. Some people have been able to see the upcoming Netflix release Malcolm & Marie, which has been garnering some major buzz for recent Emmy winner Zendaya. Will it be between her and Day for the final slot? Could one of them even disrupt the presumed safety of those other four? We’ll have to wait and see.

Get your first look at Day in action with the trailer for The United States vs. Billie Holiday below, and check out the film when it arrives on Hulu on February 26th:
