Aaron Sorkin may currently be in the thick of awards season campaigning with his Netflix courtroom drama The Trial of the Chicago 7, but it looks like he’s already got his next project lined up, and it’s over at a different streamer this time. Amazon is producing Being The Ricardos, a new biopic from the esteemed writer/director, that will be focusing on the lives of Lucille Ball and her husband Desi Arnaz.
Deadline reports that Sorkin is eyeing Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem to play the I Love Lucy leads, in a film that will focus on one week during the making of the beloved show in which tensions rise to a point that threatens not only the show, but their marriage as well.
Neither actor is locked into the role as of yet, and controversy is already mounting over Spaniard Bardem being cast to play the Cuban Arnaz, so we’ll see if that has any impact on things before production actually gets underway. This is a project that Sorkin has been a part of for quite a while, as he originally had only written it with no intention to direct, and Cate Blanchett was attached to star as Ball. Sorkin has now decided to take on directing duties as well, surely hoping to get back in the awards limelight that he’s seeing currently for Trial.
Sorkin is of course an Oscar winner for his script for The Social Network, along with nominations for Moneyball and Molly’s Game, and another locked nomination (at least) on the way for Trial. Kidman and Bardem are both former winners themselves, with Kidman winning Best Actress for her 2002 role in The Hours and Bardem in Supporting Actor for No Country for Old Men in 2007. All eyes will definitely be looking to see how this project develops in the months to come.
