As we all weather the daily storm that is 2020 we’ve probably told ourselves many different things to help shine a light at the end of the tunnel. One of those sayings is evident in the trailer for Herself: “Just keep telling yourself it’s temporary”.
That’s the advice given to Sandra, a single mother struggling to find a home for herself and her two children and a path forward after leaving an abusive partner. Sandra, played by Clare Dunne, searches for a helping hand only to find bureaucratic dead ends. In 2020 we’ve all found inspiration in the most unlikely places, and Sandra is no different. With a nudge from an old family friend Sandra decides to take matters into her own hands and build a better life for herself by actually building a home from the ground up.
The trailer for Herself weaves the emotions of fear, hope, and uncertainty together through Sandra’s journey out on her own. Desperation and frustration are all over Sandra’s face as she looks for help. It draws the audience in as they watch Sandra push forward and battle to stay on top of things. The symbolism of building a home, and the beautiful melody from Maggie Rogers, also gives the movie an added push toward something many of us are seeking in 2020- hope.
Herself (which Joey reviewed out of Film Fest 919) stars Clare Dunne, Ian Lloyd Anderson, and is directed by Phyllida Loyd. It is available on Amazon Prime Video. You can watch the trailer below:
