Aubrey Plaza is an actress that I wish more directors saw dramatic potential in. She’s already established herself as a talented comedic performer, but Plaza has also aced serious material before. Her droll nature just works on both levels. So, getting the lead in a crime drama/thriller like Emily the Criminal was always going to […] More
Every so often, a project comes along that gives a trusted familiar face a chance to shine in a lead role. Julian Higgins‘ aesthetically cold and tense thriller God’s Country gives that opportunity to Thandiwe Newton. Newton won an Emmy for her supporting role on HBO’s Westworld but she gets to stand front-and-center throughout God’s […] More
Brian Brown-Easley served his country. His country, in turn, did not serve him. That simple fact led a troubled but decent man to put himself in an impossible situation. This is the premise for the biographical drama/thriller 892, one of the saddest movies playing at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. If his story doesn’t make […] More
At the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, Awards Radar participated in a press conference with director Audrey Diwan and star Anamaria Vartolomei of Happening. The Golden Lion winner follows a bright student in 1963 France who desperately seeks an abortion at a time when the practice is heavily criminalized and taboo. Below are highlights of that […] More
If Shithouse was an appetizer for the talents of Cooper Raiff, we now have the main course. With Cha Cha Real Smooth, one of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival’s most buzzed about titles, Raiff has cemented himself as a storyteller of some note. Not only is this movie incredibly charming, it crafts one of the […] More
Is there anything more frustrating, enraging and confounding than a megachurch? Making millions of dollars off people’s beliefs, while claiming to share the same, feels like shameless exploitation of the highest order. The new film Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul aims to skewer the megachurch business and does so with energy and charismatic stars, […] More
Satire on the big screen can come in all shapes and sizes. Timely satire is especially something that can land in a big way. So, skewering toxic masculinity is quite fertile ground for a comedy in 2022. Unfortunately, Babysitter is attempting to do these things while mixing in a manic sensibility and bits of magical […] More
Lena Dunham is a storyteller who follows the beat of her own drummer. Whether it’s her first film, the independent comedy Tiny Furniture, or her hit HBO series Girls, Dunham does things her way, and you’re either in or you’re out. So far, I have been, so I went into her sophomore feature Sharp Stick […] More
The Sundance Film Festival almost always has a sex comedy or two in their lineup. Sundance also usually has a two-hander in its midst where a pair of characters just talk. However, they don’t usually coalesce, but it has here in 2022. Good Luck to You, Leo Grande is a mix of good English humor, […] More
The Sundance Film Festival can sometimes feel like it’s showing audiences the same things over and over again. When that mold is broken, well, that’s when the fest shines brightest. Nothing beats seeing something completely new. The excitement is there and you have the sense that careers are being watched. Sundance obviously is virtual here […] More
It’s always a pleasure when a talented character actor gets the starring role they deserve. With his modest debut feature A Love Song, director Max Walker-Silverman does just that for Dale Dickey. Known for her gritty portrayals of tough-minded women across film and TV, she shows a softer side in this lightly romantic drama. Yet […] More
With his prior feature Columbus, filmmaker Koganada established himself as someone with a distinct point of view. It immediately made him someone to watch, leading to a lot of anticipation surrounding his follow-up. Back at the Cannes Film Festival last year, that movie finally debuted in After Yang. Solid reviews followed, but A24 never released […] More
