Project Hail Mary is set to be a major Oscar contender this year. How big and how wide-ranging its awards season haul ends up being remains to be seen, but Amazon MGM have a player on their hands, and know it, too. In fact, they’ve revealed their campaign category pushes for awards season, and they’re even going to be taking a shot at getting an historic Best Supporting Actor nomination. More below.
According to the Amazon MGM FYC site, they’re going to be campaigning the film in fifteen categories, including Supporting Actor for James Ortiz. There are obvious campaigns being mounted, such as Best Picture, Best Director for Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Supporting Actress for Sandra Hüller, Best Adapted Screenplay for Drew Goddard, and across the board technical categories. Best Supporting Actor for Ortiz, however, would make history. Ortiz is the performer and puppeteer who operated, as well as voiced, the lovable alien Rocky, so getting him in would shatter an Oscar glass ceiling. Stay tuned to see how the Oscar campaign goes for Project Hail Mary, but Amazon MGM are sure going for it.
