The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, drifting off of the Cannes Film Festival, we’re asking about international horror…
Yesterday, the Cannes Film Festival wrapped up, and like in most years, there was some horror within the lineup. There was english language horror with Victorian Psycho, as well as international horror with something like Hope. The latter, which is sort of a genre hybrid, had me thinking about horror from across the globe. So, a combination Awards Radar Community Question / Sunday Scaries piece was born. Quite simply, today we want to know the country that makes your favorite horror films?
Now, you obviously could go with the United States, though it’s not as much an answer that generates conversation as others. That being said, the USA does put out a ton of horror, notably on the largest scale, so when one hits, it really hits. It’s certainly easier for an American fright flick to become a major thing across the globe than any other country. So, go with us if you must, but at least consider another option as well…
For me, it’s Japan that takes the cake, especially since there’s so much diversity within the genre for Japanese filmmakers. Audition is one of my favorite horror works, so that alone would get me there, but there’s also J-horror ghost stories, Kaiju monster flicks, and so much more. The other country I’m especially fond of would be France, given the interesting nature of the New French Extremity movement. That’s given us High Tension and Martyrs, for example, so the French are no slouches here, either.
Maybe you want to go somewhere else? South Korea is probably the most popular choice, and is also thematically on point since Hope is a South Korean work, so that country deserves some recognition. Greece has some notable horror too, especially with Yorgos Lanthimos breaking the mold with Dogtooth. Italy with the Giallo movement, perhaps? Suspiria fans, don’t be afraid to speak up here with your admiration.
The choice is now yours. Which country or countries is leading the way in horror for you? There’s no wrong answer here, so feel free to give us multiple options. Wherever on the globe you fall, we’re keen to find out. So, don’t be shy…
Which country puts out your favorite horror films? Let us know!
