Will Smith to Star in ‘Supermax’ with David Gordon Green Directing

Deadline reports that Will Smith is set to star in David Gordon Green’s latest movie, Supermax, an action-thriller about two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure maximum security prison.

Amazon MGM Studios acquired the film’s worldwide rights for over $70 million, with production set to begin this August. David Weil and David J. Rosen wrote the screenplay, with additional casting underway before cameras begin rolling. The second FBI agent, Smith’s partner, will be portrayed by a female actor.

The financial success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die gave Amazon confidence to cast Smith in the upcoming action film, despite the incident at the 2022 Oscars, when the actor slapped Chris Rock on stage during the telecast. His only films following that incident were Emancipation and Bad Boys, and Supermax is looking to be the next step that will allow him to reinvigorate his career.

However, it is believed Amazon won’t be giving the film a theatrical release and be sent directly to Prime Video. Whether this will change remains to be seen, but cameras are set to begin filming soon, so we should get more updates relatively quickly.
