Gird your loins, everyone, the summer movie season is finally here, and we’re starting off with a bang with The Devil Wears Prada 2! Twenty years after the release of the first film, a massive critical and commercial darling, there was a massive appetite for audiences to reunite with Andy Sachs and Miranda Priestly, in the ever-evolving (or regressing? You be the judge once you get a chance to see the film) world of journalism.
The movie is now the second-highest-grossing global opening for a 2026 film, with a domestic tally of $77 million and a global cume of $234 million. For a smaller-scale comedy? That’s incredible, and it should hopefully renew Hollywood studios’ interest in making more breezy films for the big screen and stop relegating the bulk of them to streaming services. The Devil Wears Prada 2 also marks the biggest opening ever for Meryl Streep’s career, and has already taken 70% of the original film’s total gross in one weekend!
It’s one hell of a start for what is, right now, a pretty solid year for cinemas, despite some misfires. Speaking of, Andy Serkis‘ adaptation of George Orwell‘s Animal Farm completely bombed at the box office after receiving dismal reviews. Even the usual Angel Studios audience didn’t bite; their biggest production was also their most significant failure, grossing only $3.4 million on opening night and failing to surpass The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as the latest animated offering for families.
There will be plenty of titles that audiences will be excited for. Next weekend, Mortal Kombat II is finally releasing, while The Mandalorian and Grogu, Masters of the Universe, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, Supergirl, Minions & Monsters, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are among the lineup of some of the biggest titles to shape up the summer. Which film are you looking forward to seeing the most? Let us know in the comments below!
