Back in March, I debuted my year in advance Oscar predictions piece. In it, I revealed my initial set of picks in the Best Picture category, while also more or less setting the stage for an unpredictable season. After all, it does seem like there are less overt contenders at the moment than we’ve had in the past. Still, there are films and performances to consider, so consider them we shall. What I didn’t do, however, was include the anything besides Best Picture in my predictions. The rest of the above the line fields came in part two. Now, for part three, I’m debuting technical categories as well, so we essentially have a full slate of predictions to look at…
Today, I’m not really doing any tinkering, since the below the line categories are where we’re focusing in on. These technical fields are always shots in the dark, since so many of these works haven’t debuted more than, at best, a frame or two. That being said, much like above the line, I have the same handful of films doing well across the board. This bodes well for a movie like Dune: Part Three, The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary, or Wild Horse Nine, for example. Come the nominations in January? Who knows? That’s the fun of this, to be sure. So, just keep that in mind.
The next set of predictions likely won’t come until after the Cannes Film Festival wraps up, given that a Palme d’Or win for something like James Gray‘s Paper Tiger, for example, would launch it into the Oscar race. For now, we’re in a spring standstill, waiting for things, other than the phenomenon that is Project Hail Mary, to actually get started.
