Tom Hanks to Star in Baseball Movie ‘The Comebacker’ for Marielle Heller

One of the best performances from this later stage of Tom Hanks‘ career has undoubtedly been A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood for Marielle Heller. Playing Fred Rogers led to rave reviews and an Oscar nomination. Now, Hanks and Heller are getting back together with a hot project that happens to also be a baseball movie. More on the collaboration below.

According to Variety, studios are in a bidding war for The Comebacker, which Hanks will star in for Heller. Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo are being eyed to co-star in the film, which is being adapted from a short story from Dave Eggers. Sony Pictures is in the lead to acquire it, but nothing is set in stone. Still, this baseball story, as you’ll see next, is right up Hanks’ alley.

This is what Variety says will be the plot:

It follows a fading sports journalist named Lionel whose passion for his craft and his life is awakened by a pitcher called up from the minor leagues. The title refers to an injury the pitcher suffered, when a batter sent a ball back with brute force into the pitcher’s skull. After the injury, the pitcher exhibits unexpected behavior, including poetic speech that makes stories written by Hanks’ journalist resonate with readers across the country. The short story centers on the San Francisco Giants, but one source said the screenplay will revolve around the New York Mets.
