Ranking the Best Performances So Far from Alexander Skarsgård

A24

Alexander Skarsgård has proven himself to be far more than just the smoldering vampire from True Blood (well, which one, right?). Ever since breaking through on that HBO series, he has consistently been an engaging presence on the screen. The last few years have seen him really unlocking a whole new level of his talents. With Pillion going into wide release this weekend, it seems like a perfect time to look at Skarsgård’s best work to date. So, that’s exactly what I’m going to be doing today.

In my review of Pillion (here), I praised his work like so:

Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård are both superb, in very different ways. Melling gets to do something completely different than anything he’s ever done before, while Skarsgård finds a way to make his withholding alluring. Their chemistry balances out a one sided relationship, though when that dynamic is disrupted, they get to shine in a whole new way.

Below, you can see my Skarsgård ranking. Pillion is unquestionably his best work to date, so it takes the top spot, but that’s hardly his only high quality performance. The Kill Team is criminally under-seen and arguably his most unsettling turn. There’s also the very fun supporting role in Long Shot, as well as his work in indies The Diary of a Teenage Girl and What Maisie Knew. Where does The Northman show up on this list? What else makes the cut for Skarsgård here? Find out next…
