The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, we’re once again paying tribute to a genre release from last year that should have some major holiday staying power…
Yesterday was Valentine’s Day. The holiday is a celebration of love and romance, to be sure, but it also is a time for couples to often head to the movies. Usually, that means to see a romantic comedy. Sometimes, it means counter-programming with a horror film. Last year, a hybrid work had opened the weekend prior that scratches multiple itches in Heart Eyes. The combination rom-com/slasher was not just excellent, but I still believe is destined to be a Valentine’s Day classic.
In my review here on the site at the time, I said the following about the flick:
I love a good romantic comedy. This is not news to any of you who read my stuff. It’s also no secret that I’m fond of quality horror. So, the concept of combining the two in a novel way really piqued my interest. At the same time, it goes without saying that a romantic comedy slasher film is not easy to pull off. As such, it’s a really high compliment on my part to say that Heart Eyes is just as good a rom-com as it is a slasher. The movie is a genre fan’s dream, full stop.
Heart Eyes knows that both genres need to be honored, or else neither will work in the flick. Watching it consistently play into the emotion, horror, and laughs with equal respect is a sight to behold. Getting half of it right would have led to a quality film. Instead, by going above and beyond, we have one of the best works of 2025 so far.
Heart Eyes is a bloody delight that is destined to be a Valentine’s Day cult classic. It offers something for everyone during the upcoming romantic holiday. Truly, it deserves to become an annual watch during V-Day. Mark my words, this movie is going to have staying power. It’s too good not to. I loved it and I’m certain you will too!
Once again, the film is special because it manages to be a full blown romantic comedy, with all of the machinations of the genre, as well as an honest to goodness horror title, trafficking in all that a good slasher should. So, it appeals to both audiences, while combining to become something new and exciting. In doing so, all kinds of couples, as well as all types of people in general, are able to enjoy this one. That’s a winning formula if ever there was one!
Hopefully, Heart Eyes can be the type of movie that just grows in esteem as the years pass by. This year, I’m sure plenty of folks popped in the Blu-ray or streamed it at home. It’s still on its way to becoming an annual viewing tradition, but it’s still early on in its lifespan. This film is destined to be a holiday classic, mark my words…

Stay tuned for another Sunday Scaries installment next week!
