It’s Super Bowl Weekend, and it’s yet another quiet week at the movies, with Sam Raimi’s Send Help retaining its spot as the number one film of the weekend, garnering $10 million domestically and bringing its global tally to $53.7 million.
As for this weekend’s new releases, a few of them cracked the top ten, starting with the Kinnane brothers’ Solo Mio, which was bolstered by a viral marketing campaign from actor Kevin James, who, in the weeks leading up to the film’s release, shot videos for his character’s Instagram page (thisismatttaylor).
It might have helped the film to succeed in its opening weekend, grossing $7.2 million domestically and already making it one of Angel Studios’ best openings as a relatively new distributor. Similarly, Bleecker Street’s Stray Kids: The domiNATE Experience raked in big numbers for the independent studio, grossing $5.5 million domestically in its opening weekend, a major win for entertainment focused on a KPop band.
Luc Besson‘s Dracula also performed much better than expected, with a $4.5 million domestic opening (a rarity for films released by Vertical Entertainment), while Renny Harlin‘s The Strangers: Chapter 3 predictably bombed, with the final nail in the coffin for this terrible franchise at $3.4 million. Reviews for all installments were abysmal and each chapter had a retroactively worse reception from the public than the last. What did you think was going to happen for this third entry, which was shot at the same time as the other two? I’ll let you answer this question on your own…
Next week is Valentine’s Day, and there is a bevy of strong releases, from Emerald Fennell‘s Wuthering Heights, Bart Layton‘s Crime 101, and GOAT, an animated film released in a landscape where family entertainment seems not to be Hollywood’s priority. The films seem diversified enough to make a tangible commercial impact. Is there a specific title that you’re most looking forward to seeing next weekend? Please let us know in the comments below!
