Hungary to Select László Nemes’ ‘Orphan’ as Best International Film Submission for Oscars

As Awards season begins to take shape, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Hungary will be selecting László NemesOrphan as their official submission for Best International Feature Film for the upcoming Academy Awards.

Co-written by Nemes and Clara Royer, the movie follows a young Jewish boy in 1957, Budapest, after the uprising of the Communist regime. The boy is raised by his mother, who gives him hope that his father will eventually return, until a brutish man appears at his front door and claims to be his true parental figure.

The film had its world premiere in the main competition at this year’s Venice Film Festival, and also recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. It has so far received mixed reviews from critics, but Nemes is a household name in Hungary, having given the country an Oscar in 2016 for Son of Saul and has firmly established himself as a filmmaker to watch. Time will tell if the movie will go all the way as more contenders for Best International Feature pop up soon!
