Interview: The Righteous Gemstones’ Star Edi Patterson Teases New Film With Danny McBride

Edi Patterson first met Danny McBride auditioning for the criminally underseen HBO series Vice Principals, but comedy fans are fortunate that their collaboration extended into the world of The Righteous Gemstones, where Patterson serves as a writer in addition to her role as Judy Gemstone.

“We had a pretty immediate comedy chemistry together,” says Patterson.

The actress’ work as Judy includes a smorgasbord of comedic excellence, and just might be highlighted by a couple of outlandish scenes opposite S4 newcomer Megan Mullally, lending her television legacy to the character of Lori Millsap, Eli Gemstone’s (John Goodman) old friend and lover. As Patterson’s Judy humps and grinds on Mullally’s Lori in a bizarre yet brazen attempt to separate the woman from her beloved father, one can’t help but mourn the completion of such a special comedy. Across its four seasons, The Righteous Gemstones not only became funnier and funnier, but also took more and more creative risks. Patterson’s role as both a writer and a performer afforded her particular space to surprise her fellow castmates, and she can recall countless instances of the tight-knit cast making one another laugh, including a moment this season between her and her onscreen husband BJ Barnes (Tim Baltz).

“Sometimes even just the way that Tim Baltz would move his mouth would gut me,” says Patterson.

Patterson is effusive in her praise of not only the comedic chops of her fellow Gemstones stars, but the genuine camaraderie that developed amongst each and everyone of them over the years. And with Patterson and McBride’s collaboration continuing across both Vice Principals and The Righteous Gemstones, the Texas native teased a similarly intriguing project on the horizon:

“After we did Vice Principals, Danny and I wrote a movie together, which we still will end up making at some point,” Patterson says. “He will direct it, and I’m in it, mostly with a teenage kid.”

While plot details obviously remain under wraps, we will be anticipating the feature-length evolution of the duo’s impeccable comedic chemistry with bated breath here at Awards Radar.
