In a piece of surprising news, Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie is moving forward after two years of radio silence on whether or not cameras would roll. The Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker has been tapped to helm a live-action film set in a galaxy far, far, away since 2022, with Jonathan Tropper writing the screenplay.
Now, in our first update in a long time, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ryan Gosling is circling the project to play the lead character. Details on the story, other than it will be a standalone installment, aren’t known at this time. Levy was eyeing to direct a boy band comedy, which would’ve reunited him and frequent collaborators Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman after Deadpool & Wolverine, but if the deal with Gosling goes through, Star Wars will be his next project.
Should this happen, production would be ready to start by the fall, making it the second post-Rise of Skywalker film to actively shoot after Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released in May of 2026.
