Sunday Scaries: Which Horror Films Could Hear Their Names Called on Oscar Nomination Morning?

The Sunday Scaries are upon us once again! Yes, as the weekend concludes, most of us feel an oncoming sense of anticipatory dread about the week ahead. Anxiety about work manifests itself into a feeling that’s known as the Sunday Scaries. However, we at Awards Radar are here to combat that, by taking back the name. Now, we want you think about a horror-centric piece on the site when you hear the term. So, let us continue on with another installment of the Awards Radar Sunday Scaries! Today, with the Academy Award nominations looming, we’re looking at if any horror films have a chance to be cited…

This year is shaping up to be a landmark year for horror at the Academy Awards. When we look at the Oscar nomination list in one week, multiple horror films could be among the nominees. The Substance is actually sitting very pretty for nominations, while Nosferatu has some real below the line promise as well. If you’re a horror fan, these final days of Phase One are worth getting excited about!

Below, you’ll see which fright flicks I think have a chance at an Oscar nomination or two. There’s a pair of contenders far more likely than others, but three actually did show up on the Academy’s shortlists, so you know they’ve been watching them. If nothing else, that’s something to take solace in. However, this year feels different…

The Substance is obviously the big one here, legitimately in play for a Best Picture nomination, with Demi Moore in the thick of the Best Actress race. If either or both of those categories come through, it won’t be crazy to see filmmaker Coralie Fargeat get into Best Director or Best Original Screenplay, while Margaret Qualley is certainly a Best Supporting Actress contender. Plus, it does seem likely that the film is going to get a technical category nomination, if not more. Whether it’s in Best Makeup & Hairstyling or elsewhere remains to be seen, but this flick is looking at multiple Academy Award nominations when all is said and done.

Below the line, Nosferatu is definitely in play and could be a decently big tech category player. Now, it could also get shut out, without question, but there’s several spots where it could show up. Look at Best Production Design and Best Cinematography as the likeliest cases, though there’s a lot of variables here. Still, it’s very much in the thick of it, below the line.

As for other contenders, it’s probably a pretty long shot for Alien: Romulus, Heretic, Longlegs, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Terrifier 3. Now, there’s a world where these movies show up, but their odds are far worse. Alien: Romulus is on some of the Oscar shortlists, so that’s a leg up, while Hugh Grant has gotten a bit of attention for Heretic, so you can’t completely ignore him/it either. As for the rest? It just doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen.

We’re going to find out in a week what happens, and this is the most likely year in recent memory for horror to show up and get an Oscar nomination, so be excited there. Is it pretty much on the shoulders of The Substance (and to a lesser degree, Nosferatu)? Yes. Does that take anything away from the genre? Absolutely not. Sit back, relax, and prepare to see a scary movie or two cited by the Academy…

Stay tuned to see which fright flicks wind up with an Oscar nomination!
