Considering how much I love The Peanut Butter Falcon and how much I sung that film’s praises that year, it’s kind of wild that I’ve never gotten Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz in for a chat. Ironically, the filmmakers actually did discuss me during an interview that season, in regards to my rave review. It was very surreal, but also leads to a very funny bit at the top of this discussion. Yes, they’re finally here, right as their sophomore feature, Los Frikis, gets set to hit theaters. It’s a unique flick that almost has to be seen in order to be believed. Based on a true story, it’s Cuba-set coming-of-age story, where a group of punk rockers in the early 1990s deliberately inject themselves with HIV in order to live at a government-run treatment home which offers a better life than what they currently have. Dark and hopeful in equal measure, it features Adria Arjona in a central role, though the star is Héctor Medina, who is a true discovery. You’ll hear all about it next, and boy, is this a fun chat, so be sure to listen in.
Below, you can hear my conversation with Nilson and Schwartz. We actually spoke nearly as long before and after recording as we did during, so it turned into a very wide-ranging chat. As talented as they are, they’re even better guys, so the very chill vibe here is completely natural. Hearing about how and why they make movies the way they do is absolutely fascinating, especially since Los Frikis is in some ways completely different than The Peanut Butter Falcon, but also clearly from the same duo. They’re as interesting as it gets, storyteller-wise, so this was a pleasure. The film begins its theatrical run this weekend and deserves to be sought out. You won’t regret it…
Here now is my interview with Los Frikis filmmakers Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz. Enjoy:
