Interview: Rashida Jones Discusses Her Moving Short Film ‘A Swim Lesson’

Rashida Jones is more than just an actress. She’s a filmmaker in her own right, co-writing with Will McCormack the romantic dramedy Celeste and Jesse Forever, as well as (in part) Toy Story 4. Now, they’ve created a documentary short in A Swim Lesson, The official description of the film is as follows: “Watching a child learn how to swim is like witnessing a great opera. The maestro of this emotional orchestra is Bill Marsh. Swimming is the closest human beings will ever get to flying. And there is no greater joy (or fear) than watching your kid take the leap. Watching Bill teach kids how to swim is the parable we need, because inside his lessons are profound universal truths. An LA Times Co-Release.” Recently, Jones hopped on Zoom to discuss the movie with me. Today, that chat comes your way.

Below, you can hear my conversation with Jones. We talk about her inspiration to make the film, as well as how she’s not precious and happy to cut a movie to the bone in order to make it better. It’s a lovely chat, as she’s both very matter of fact but also quite warm. She’s also made a hell of a short documentary, one that might make you feel better about the world around you. As a bonus, you can watch the short right here, which you definitely should.

Here now is our interview with A Swim Lesson filmmaker Rashida Jones. Enjoy:
