Interview: Chatting About the Music of ‘Spellbound’ with Alan Menken and Glen Slater

If you’ve fallen in love with a song in an animated film, there’s a good chance that the music of Alan Menken is responsible. Nineteen Academy Award nominations (and counting), as well as eight Oscars on his mantle, can attest to that. So, when Menken works on a project, it’s worth taking notice. Several weeks ago, I was able to watch Spellbound, the new animated film featuring music and lyrics by Menken and his longtime collaborator Glen Slater. More recently, I had the opportunity to speak over Zoom with them both about the charming little movie. Today, our conversation comes your way.

Below, you can see my chat with Menken and Slater. I wanted to know about their collaboration, for sure, but I also was very curious to hear about how they’re able to keep things fresh. Both are lovely men, with Menken in particular very charming, leading to some very fun little moments. The passion they have for the work is infectious, and if you weren’t already interested in watching Spellbound, this should put you over the edge. The flick is streaming on Netflix and is a nice big of fun for the whole family…
