Interview: ‘Saturday Night’ Star Gabriel LaBelle on the Joys of Working with Jason Reitman and Steven Spielberg

In a very short period of time, Gabriel LaBelle has really made a name for himself. Now, playing Steven Spielberg and Lorne Michaels for Spielberg himself and Jason Reitman, respectively, will really leave a mark on the business if you do a good job. LaBelle more than did a good job, so he’s quickly become an exciting young actor. When I saw The Fabelmans a few years ago at the Toronto International Film Festival, I said in my review here that “Gabriel LaBelle is a discovery and a revelation.” Now, with Saturday Night continuing to showcase his talents, I feel confident in saying the sky is the limit for him. Last week, I spent some time chatting about both movies with LaBelle. Today, that chat comes your way.

Universal Pictures

In my review of Saturday Night from back at Telluride (here), I said the following about LaBelle:

This ensemble cast is absolutely aces. Whether they look like their real-life counterparts or not, they find the spirit of these geniuses. As our guide throughout the madness, Gabriel LaBelle is a steady hand, showing cracks but also trying to make everything work. Lorne Michaels was about to change the TV landscape forever, but in the moment, he just wants to make it to 11:30.

Below, you can see my conversation with LaBelle. Now, we bounce back and forth between The Fabelmans and Saturday Night because I was equally interested in his experiences with both Reitman and Spielberg, but it’s Saturday Night we’re truly leaning into. We talk a bit about a TIFF event we were both at, as well as his fellow cast members from the Reitman flick. It’s a very easygoing and free-form discussion, befitting an actor who I feel can do just about anything right now. If you haven’t seen Saturday Night yet, the film is currently in theaters and is a must-see. Plus, if you want to watch the movie in the comfort of your own home, that’s available to you as well. As of last week, it’s available to buy or rent digitally, while the Blu-ray and DVD are hitting shelves on January 7th, 2025. However you watch it, make sure you watch it…
