The good team behind Apple TV+’s Emmy-nominated series Bad Sisters headed to Manhattan for the NY premiere of season two. The event included many of the series’ stars including Sharon Horgan, Eva Birthistle, Eve Hewson, Sarah Greene, Fiona Shaw, Michael Smiley, Daryl McCormack, Saise Quinn, and producer/director, Dearbhla Walsh.
The first season had more than its share of drama, humor, emotion, and plenty of intrigue. Season two promises all that an more with the addition of Fiona Shaw as the sister of Roger Muldoon (Smiley) who looks to stir things up in Dublin. It picks ups two years after the events of season one (which we not spoil here) and the secrets of the Garvey sisters past keeps resurfacing meaning that more secrets, lies and maybe even more demises are in store.
Awards Radar attended the (green) red carpet event and spoke with many of the attendees about what fans a can expect from the second season of the acclaimed series. It earned four Emmy nominations, Critics Choice, three BAFTA wins (including for Drama series), and many others.
Horgan who not only stars in Bad Sisters, but also co-created the series, spoke about the secret behind the series she created. “Bad Sisters is kind of a nutty premise, but it always has a real truth at its heart. Catastrophe was all about just trying to stay in love when you’ve got kids and how hard that is,” shared Horgan. “But yeah, work with good people and just be as truthful and true to the material as possible. Then I think you can’t go wrong. There are so many great shows out there, so much content, and if you’re going to rise above it and attract people, then it has to be really, really good. So, I think that’s the secret.”
One newcomer comes to the series with quite the catalog of work including Andor, the Harry Potter film series, Killing Eve and many others dating back four decade. Of course, I am referring to Shaw who spoke about joining the series. “I’d seen their show and I loved it. I knew that Sharon would come up with a wonderful story and she was going to tell one,” shared Shaw. “She sort of had half the idea already developed as we went in. So, half of me jumped in slightly like jumping out of a plane and hoping the parachute would open. But I knew it would open because she’s a brilliant writer, Dearbhla is a wonderful director and the gang of girls are just the nicest people you can meet.”
When asked what to expect in season two, Birthistle and Greene enthusiastically tag-teamed the question, “A lot of shocks. A lot of shocks. There’s a lot of big surprises in Season 2. A lot of huge emotions. Yeah, big emotions. Lots of emotions. I think it’s a more complicated storyline, complicated script. There’s more layers to it. There’s more characters. We’re introducing new characters. The amazing Fiona Shaw joins us. We see more of Michael Smiley who plays Roger. Owen McDonnell. We’ve got lots of amazing new cast. So I think audiences are in for lots of fun surprises but then some big shocks.”
Smiley, whose role becomes much bigger in season two had three words of advice for fans, “Just watch it.” A sentiment I completely agree with after watching the first few episodes of the new season, the series does not lose a step and may be even darker and slyer than the first. Watch the red carpet interviews and photos below.
The first two episodes of season 2 are now streaming on Apple TV+ and will be followed with new episodes weekly premiering on Wednesdays until the season concludes on December 23rd – an early holiday gift for fans. Make a date with the Bad Sisters, but before you watch the new season be sure to watch season one as well, not to do so would be a crime.
